A fireplace is usually the first thing you notice in a room, and the stone around it sets the tone for the whole space. Stoneman Fabrications designs, fabricates, and installs custom stone fireplace surrounds, hearths, and full-height slab fireplace walls from our San Mateo shop. A marble fireplace surround is our most requested design, but we also work in quartzite, porcelain, and granite. Since 2007, homeowners, interior designers, and builders across San Francisco and the Peninsula have trusted us to turn the fireplace into the centerpiece of the room.
We build everything from slim, modern frames around the firebox to wide, heavy stone borders with real presence. We fabricate raised and flush hearths sized to your opening and your room, and dramatic floor-to-ceiling slab walls that run the stone all the way up. Whether your home is a mid-century Eichler, a Pacific Heights Victorian, or a new build in Atherton, we shape the stone to suit the architecture.
To finish the look, we fabricate matching stone mantels, floating ledges, and mitered returns from the same slab, so every piece of the fireplace reads as one continuous design. Refacing an existing brick or tile fireplace? We assess the current surround during your consultation and recommend whether to clad over it or remove it first. Either way, you get a clean, modern stone fireplace without rebuilding the wall.
Every stone behaves differently around heat, light, and everyday living, so we walk you through the options before you commit to a slab. A marble fireplace surround brings classic veining and timeless elegance, and marble is the natural choice for traditional mantels and book-matched fireplace walls. Quartzite offers a similar look with greater hardness and durability. Porcelain comes in large, thin slabs with excellent heat and UV stability, which makes it ideal for full-height walls and modern designs. Granite is extremely hard-wearing and suits busy hearths that see firewood and foot traffic.
A fireplace wall is often cut from two or more slabs, so where the seams and veins land makes or breaks the result. We help you select slabs at the Bay Area’s top stone distributors and plan the layout before cutting begins, so the veining flows across the face of the fireplace. For book-matched designs, we open consecutive slabs like the pages of a book, creating a mirror-image pattern that turns the fireplace into a work of art.
Every surround is cut on our Italian Prussiani waterjet and hand-finished in-house, including edges, miters, and returns. Our own installation crew sets the stone and coordinates with your contractor, tile setter, or fireplace installer, so your stone fireplace surround is installed cleanly, safely, and on schedule.
We fabricate and install the stone surround, hearth, and wall cladding. The gas or wood-burning insert is installed by a licensed fireplace contractor, and we coordinate our schedule with theirs.
Most natural stone and porcelain handle fireplace heat well. The exact clearances come from your unit’s manufacturer specifications, and we build to them on every job.
In many cases, yes. We assess the existing surround during the consultation and recommend either cladding over it or removing it first, depending on its condition and the depth available.
Two consecutive slabs are opened like the pages of a book, so their veining mirrors across the seam. It creates a striking, symmetrical pattern that works especially well with marble and quartzite.
Quartz works on surrounds that stay away from direct high heat, but its resins can discolor near intense heat. For most fireplaces we recommend porcelain, quartzite, marble, or granite.
Yes. We fabricate mantels, ledges, and floating stone shelves from the same slab as the surround, so the color and veining match exactly.
